Exhaust Sensors for DPF Regeneration

As strides towards a more environmentally-friendly automotive industry are getting larger,

 

Diesel Particulate Filter (DPF) removal has now been made illegal. One reason for their removal was down to blockages and inefficient filter regenerations. Cambiare’s range of sensors, rectify this problem.

Cambiare provides both Exhaust Gas Pressure Sensors (EGPS) and Exhaust Temperature Sensors (ETS); the latter being a totally new product to the aftermarket. The combined data from the Air Mass Sensors (AMS) and the Exhaust Temperature Sensors prompt the ECU to regenerate the DPF to prevent and clear blockages, as well as monitoring temperature and pressure levels during regeneration. Quality is important when selecting sensors, as a malfunctioning sensor can cause unnecessary filter regenerations, power losses, reduced filter lifespan and an increase in pollution levels.

Filter Regeneration

DPFs are now a legal requirement for vehicles originally manufactured with one, as they prevent diesel particulate matter and soot from polluting the atmosphere. Once the filter is saturated with particles, the engine runs a programme, known as “filter regeneration”, to burn off pollutants by elevating exhaust temperatures to produce high amounts of NOx to oxidise accumulated ash.

Exhaust Temperature Sensor (ETS)

For exhaust gas temperature measurements, Thin Film Platinum sensors are proven technology used to meet worldwide emissions standards. The sensing element works on a positive temperature coefficient, so if the exhaust temperature increases, the sensor’s resistance also increases. Typically an ETS measures exhaust temperatures up to 900°C. As intense heat is created during combustion, Cambiare’s sensors are made from metals that can withstand high temperatures. They meet or exceed all OEM specifications, providing the highest level of accuracy and reliability in extreme conditions.

The range consists of approximately 150 parts which cover a wide range of applications, including the Saab 9-3 Estate 1.9 TTiD (01-11), Audi A6 Avant 3.0TDi (2011>) and Vauxhall Astra 2.0 CDTi (2011>).

Exhaust Gas Pressure Sensor (EGPS)

Cambiare’s EGP sensors transmit differential measurements taken before and after the DPF and sends that data to the ECU. When these pressures exceed set levels, filter regeneration will automatically occur, or a light on the dashboard will alert the driver that a garage visit is needed.

Customers can be confident in Cambiare’s sensors. Exhaust pressure sensors need to operate in critical assembly conditions and as such undergo rigorous testing as part of the manufacturing process. Tests include reactions to extreme environmental conditions, vibrations, humidity and over-pressure.

The product range is still evolving and developing but ten parts, covering key applications, such as the BMW 3 Series 2.0 (2012>), Audi A5 2.0 TDi (2012>) and Mercedes-Benz SLK 2.1 (2012>) are currently available and the range is due to rapidly increase.

Sales Opportunities

It is recommended that exhaust sensors are replaced when DPFs are replaced, as sensor failure can result in saturation levels increasing far beyond recommended levels which can have a detrimental effect on the engine. Exhaust temperature sensors are prone to damage during exhaust replacements and it is therefore also advised to replace them simultaneously with a DPF and/or exhaust, rather than waiting for the dashboard warning light to flash.
