This video demonstrates how to replace brake shoes and wheel cylinders using a TRW Superkit (pre-assembled brake shoe kit).
The initial sequence shows the pre-assembled Superkit; brake shoes and adjuster.
Sequence of operation:
Remove road wheel
Release/disengage the self adjust mechanism
Remove the brake drum
Remove the hold down springs using correct tools
Release brake shoes from lower location
Disassemble brake shoes, adjuster, handbrake cable and remove
Disconnect brake pipe from wheel cylinder and cap the end using rubber cap provided on new cylinder
Remove wheel cylinder fixings and remove old cylinder
Thoroughly clean the back plate using brake cleaner to remove old friction dust and dirt etc.
Fit new wheel cylinder and reconnect brake pipe
Apply grease supplied, only to the contact points as shown. Do not apply excessive amounts!
Re-connect handbrake cable to lever mechanism using correct tools
Fit new pre-assembled shoe/adjuster kit, firstly locating over the wheel cylinder (notice pistons held in place with correct spring tool)
Locate shoes in bottom fixing, again using correct tool to lever the new shoe into position against spring tension
Fix shoes in place using the new pins and hold down springs provided
The complete new brake system, ready for the drum to be fitted
Re-fit the brake drum, ensuring the nut is tightened to the torque level as specified by the vehicle manufacturer
Lock the nut as shown
Replace the cap, and finally re-fit the road wheel, again ensuring the nuts are tightened to the torque level as specified by the vehicle manufacturer.
