Engine Management

Secondary Air Pump

Troubleshooting:

  • Symptoms:
    • Loud whistling noise from the secondary air pump
    • Failure on emission tests during MoT
  • Possible causes for failure:
    • A condensate consisting of water and gases has collected in the air vent or in the pump resulting in corrosion due to secondary air valve failure
    • Exhaust gas deposits collecting in the drive motor of the pump

Testing:

  1. As the secondary air valve controls the flow of air into the exhaust valve it has a clean side (fresh air supplied by the secondary air pump) and a dirty side (exhaust manifold side).

A simple check to see if the valve is working properly is toensure that the clean side has no exhaust gas debris. Exhaust gas debris on the clean side is a sign of a faulty secondary air valve.

  1. The secondary air pump is an electronically controlled part so ensure that none of the connectors are damaged or rusty. At this point you should check that there is a current to the connectors while idling – without this the pump will fail to operate.
  1. The final check is to test whether air is being pumped out of the secondary air pump. This can only be done when the engine is cold. Start by disconnecting the output hose on the pump then start the engine. If the valve is working then air will be pumped out of the secondary air pump.

Other components to check:

  • Air pump fuse – if the air pump fuse is damaged the secondary air pump will fail to operate
  • Electric switchover valve – if faulty, this may stop the secondary air valve from actuating
  • Secondary air valve – if the secondary air valve is malfunctioning exhaust gases may be entering the pump, causing damage to the pump itself

When replacing the secondary air pump always replace the valve as this will ensure the new secondary air pump is protected.
