Air Temperature Sensor

  • Monitors the temperature of the air flowing into the engine
  • The sensor can also be used to monitor interior and exterior air temperature as part of the vehicle comfort settings

Troubleshooting:

  • Symptoms:
    • High nitrogen oxide reading
  • Possible causes for failure:
    • Damaged switch connectors
    • High intake air temperature

Testing:

To test the air temperature sensor it must first be disconnected from the vehicle. It is important that the ignition is turned off when disconnecting.

  1. Check the sensor for resistance using a multimeter. It is important to check the resistance at different temperatures as this will demonstrate if the sensor is functioning correctly.
    1. At room temperature resistance should be about 1,500 ohm
    2. When cold (0°C – freezing point) the resistance should be around 5,000-6,000 ohm. This can be tested by freezing the sensor beforehand

While these are only estimated measurements the most important factor is that the sensors resistance changes with temperature

  1. If it appears that the sensor is working correctly, check electrical connections for voltage using a multimeter. You should also check all surrounding wires for signs of damage.
