Brake Light Switch
-
Causes brake lights to light up when the brakes are applied
-
Operated mechanically or hydraulically
Troubleshooting:
-
Symptoms:
-
Brake light failing to light up
-
Possible causes for failure:
-
Damaged switch connectors
Testing:
-
Locate the switch under the dashboard and check that both wires are securely connected to the switch. If this is not the case the switch will not activate the brake lights.
-
Next, ensure that the brake pedal connects with the switch when depressed, if this is not aligned properly then the pedal will not activate the switch.
-
If the above checks do not show any issues with the connections then the wiring will need to be tested. For this you will need a voltmeter.
-
Firstly connect the positive wire to one of the wires connected to the switch. If the voltmeter registers 12 volts then the feed wire for the switch has been located. If not, this wire should show no voltage until the brake pedal is depressed.
-
Once depressed the voltmeter should register 12 volts which suggests the switch is operating correctly. If this is not the case then the switch will need replacing.
-
If neither wire registers a voltage the indication is that the wiring to the switch is the issue and will need to be checked accordingly.
