Engine Management

Fitting EGR Valves On Toyota Auris, Avensis & Corolla Models

Designed to recirculate a metered quantity of exhaust gas back into the combustion process, the EGR valve reduces the amount of oxygen entering the chamber.

This in turn, lowers the temperature reached during the combustion process to increase engine efficiency. By doing this, nitrogen oxides (NOx) in diesel and petrol engines are minimised.

UNDERSTANDING THE BREAKING POINT

Exposed to soot, oil and carbon build up in extreme temperatures, EGR valves have to perform under harsh environments which make it susceptible to failure. Symptoms of a faulty EGR valve can include the loss of engine power, juddering, car falling into ‘limp mode’, as well as black smoke appearing from exhausts.

If found faulty, technicians should make it a point to replace EGR valves instead of cleaning the old unit. It is also important to clean the pipework on both sides of the EGR valve to ensure that existing deposits do not transfer onto the new unit.

FINDING THE RIGHT FIT

Presently, there are two EGR valves catalogued for a number of Toyota Auris, Avensis, Corolla 2.2 diesel models. A number of technicians have encountered the challenge of trying to determine the correct EGR valve for those applications as there are no visual or external differences. Even at an OE level, they are often both listed for the vehicle when searched by their chassis number.

It goes without question that identifying the correct replacement part is imperative. In this specific case, the only way to make this possible is to measure the size of the valve head after the old valve has been removed from the car. One is 14.5mm, and the other is 19mm in diameter. When technicians identify the correct size, the correct Cambiare part can be ordered with ease.
