Switches & Sensors

Radiator Fan Switch

  • When the radiator reaches a predetermined temperature, the switch triggers the electric fan to run in order to cool the engine

Troubleshooting:

  • Symptoms:
    • Engine overheating
    • Engine fan will fail to actuate

Possible causes for failure:

  • Sensor element has become damaged due to high engine temperature
  • Circuit broken between switch and ECU

Testing:

Before checking the radiator fan switch it is important that the ignition is switched off and the engine bay has had time to cool down.

  1. Once cool, disconnect the switch from the radiator fan, and connect the car battery to the fan motor. If the fan operates this suggests that the fan is not the problem.
  1. To test the switch you will need to heat it up to re-create the normal operating conditions. With an ohmmeter connected to the switch, submerse/suspend the switch in water. Just before the water boils the switch should close (to allow the fan to actuate) at this point the ohmmeter should show zero ohm. If this is not the case the switch will need to be replaced
